How we're moving forward on sustainability

Learn how an improved manufacturing process and a more repairable design make reMarkable Paper Pro Move our most sustainable paper tablet yet.

How do you make a paper tablet sustainable?

To answer it, we need to ask even more questions: Where does the cobalt in the battery come from? How does this manufacturer power its assembly line? What type of fuel does this shipping method consume? How easy is the product to repair? We could go on and on.

With every answer we find, the more sustainable we’re able to make our paper tablets. And with the launch of reMarkable Paper Pro Move, we’ve found some important answers.

Jumping to the numbers

On paper, one reMarkable Paper Pro Move generates 34.9 kg of emissions, measured in carbon dioxide equivalents (or CO2e for short).

Notice that we said “on paper,” because that figure doesn’t tell the full story. It’s just what’s called a baseline. Think of it as a starting point — if we did nothing to reduce our impact on the environment, that’s how much production of one reMarkable Paper Pro Move would emit.

In reality, reMarkable Paper Pro Move’s carbon footprint is 25.4 kg, 27% lower than the baseline figure, and nearly half that of reMarkable Paper Pro.

(In case you’re wondering how we calculate these numbers, they’re based on mapping conducted by sustainability consultancy firm CEMAsys in 2025, using the GHG Protocol and ISO 14040:2006 as points of reference.)

Closing the gap

What’s with the gap between the baseline and the actual emissions figure? Maybe you’re thinking “Small device, smaller carbon footprint.” Makes sense, right?

Actually, size is just part of the story. After all, reMarkable Paper Pro Move contains virtually all the technology as reMarkable Paper Pro, our most advanced paper tablet. Parts like our custom-made Canvas Color display stack with a built-in reading light, a battery that provides two weeks of power, and 64 GB of internal storage.

Here’s the actual reason: Working with the companies that supply the materials and components that go into your reMarkable Paper Pro Move, we’ve answered some of the questions we posed in the introduction to this article. Together, these answers add up to real emissions cuts.

Most of the cuts come from using more renewable energy in the manufacturing process, and the rest from using more recycled materials, including:

- 100% recycled aluminum in the midframe and the power button

- 100% recycled rare-earth metal in the magnets

- 100% recycled cobalt in the battery

Metals, by the way, are excellent for recyclability — some can be reused virtually indefinitely without losing their performance. And thanks to reMarkable Paper Pro Move’s more repairable design, we’ve made it easy to give the metals we’ve used a new life.

Like an open book

Place reMarkable Paper Pro Move and reMarkable Paper Pro next to each other, and the two paper tablets look practically identical (well, except for the difference in size). Same textured glass display, same anodized aluminum frame. Flip them over to reveal a big change: reMarkable Paper Pro Move trades a full aluminum body for a separate backplate.

This backplate makes it easy for the experts at our assembly site to replace or repair most of the internal components, like the battery or even the circuit board. And no major components are scrapped during repair, reducing waste.

On refurbishment

Millions of people around the world use our paper tablets to do their best thinking, but occasionally, someone finds out it’s not for them. What happens when a paper tablet is returned to us?

The shorter a paper tablet has to travel, the less transportation emissions. We now have basic refurbishment centers in Europe and Asia, and a North American location will open in early 2026.

When we receive a returned paper tablet, we test and inspect it, then grade it based on how much work is needed before we can repackage and sell it again. Since the launch of reMarkable Paper Pro, the numbers show a clear trend: Nearly every reMarkable Paper Pro returned to us (86%, in fact) just needs to be refurbished before it can be repackaged and sold. Think of it as giving it a good cleaning.

To make sure a refurbished paper tablet lives up to our standards before we sell it again, we run it through the same rigorous quality controls as a freshly produced paper tablet. Once it passes the tests, the paper tablet is made available in the refurbished section of our webshop (but note that refurbished paper tablets may not be available in every region).

Live to move another day

We’ve said it before, and we’ll say it again: The most sustainable product is the one you already own. That’s why we design our paper tablets to be durable, and support them with a steady stream of software updates, year after year.

Here’s an example: When we launched reMarkable Paper Pro Move on September 3, 2025, we also started rolling out version 3.22 of our custom operating system, reMarkable OS. That same software update also rolled out to all our other paper tablets — even reMarkable 1, which launched all the way back in 2017.

Where are we going next?

Whenever we start working on a new product, we look at how it can bring us closer to our long-term vision for sustainability at reMarkable. With reMarkable Paper Pro Move, we’ve taken several important steps: more renewable energy and recycled materials in the assembly process, a durable, repairable design, and a more extensive network of repair and refurbishment centers around the world.
