This is your brain on reMarkable

Neuroscientists hooked up PC and reMarkable users to a brain monitor. Here’s what they found.

Tech companies make plenty of claims, but few (if any) have the data to back them up.

This isn’t science fiction: Doing focused work on a paper tablet can make you less stressed and more creative. It can even boost focus and deep thinking compared to working on a PC.

So, if you’ve been on the fence about a paper tablet, or wondered if they’re a great investment for your team, here are a few more reasons to consider reMarkable.

Less stress — using reMarkable reduces stress levels by 35%

reMarkable 2 helped reduce stress levels when participants focused on one task at a time. This means it supports a more relaxed and focused working environment.

Lighter mental load — cognitive demand drops by 30%

Working on reMarkable 2 required less mental effort compared to a PC. This benefit is most noticeable when trying to remember things, filling out surveys, handling stressful tasks, and reading.

Unlocking ideas — creative thinking increases by 25%

reMarkable 2 dramatically increased participants’ verbal and visual creativity. Ideas became more numerous, diverse, and novel, suggesting that using a paper tablet leads to a stronger divergent thinking.

Sharper concentration — brain focus strengthens by 20%

Participants using a reMarkable 2 showed substantially higher levels of brain-related signals of focus. In other words: when you use a paper tablet, you can focus more on the task at hand, and without distractions.

More immersion — deep thinking increases by 17%

The brains of participants who worked on a reMarkable 2 showed stronger signals of deep processing and immersion. Our paper tablets are distraction-free by design, which can help you dedicate more of your mental capacity to deep work.

Verbal memory — story retention enhanced by 17%

The study tested for both story memory and verbal memory. Participants who read a story on a reMarkable 2 remembered it more clearly than those who read it on a PC. There was no difference in simple word recall, which suggests that a paper tablet aids in memory with deeper thinking and meaning.

Mental fitness — brain fatigue lowered by 11%

PC users in the study experienced more brain fatigue and used more energy than reMarkable 2 users. The most significant differences emerged when performing tasks like memory recall and note-taking.

Understanding the study methodology

“Our results suggest that using a reMarkable paper tablet lets users focus more on the task at hand, and without distractions,” said Dr. Thomas Zoëga Ramsøy, author of the study.
  • The study was commissioned by reMarkable and conducted by neuroscientist Dr. Thomas Zoëga Ramsøy.
  • It involved 60 working professionals between the ages of 25-44.
  • Participants were randomly assigned into two groups: one working on a PC; the other, a reMarkable 2 paper tablet.
  • Participants performed tasks involving reading, learning, creativity, multitasking, and memory recall.
  • The study tracked biometric responses, such as electroencephalogram (EEG) brain monitoring, and heart rate variability (HRV), to measure the participants’ performance.
  • The study is currently undergoing peer review pending publication in a leading scientific journal. In the meantime, you can read this preprint of the manuscript.

From brainwaves to better thinking

While much technology scatters attention, these findings point toward a different possibility — tools designed for clarity, not chaos. reMarkable offers a dedicated space where deeper thinking can unfold, a quiet place for your mind that's insulated from digital noise.
