Let’s say you’re organizing a workshop for your team, and it’s important that you make the most of your time together. What’s the best way to stay on track?

Our desktop app is a great place to start planning and prep. For example, you can use the app to create a simple agenda to give your workshop structure.

To keep you focused as you work, the app features minimalistic formatting options that support a distraction-free typing experience. You can choose between three different paragraph styles — title, subheading, and body text — and add bullet points to your agenda.

Get started with the reMarkable desktop app

Close the agenda to save it to the cloud. As long as your reMarkable is connected to Wi-Fi, the agenda will sync automatically to your paper tablet.

In the workshop, leave your laptop behind. Instead, bring your reMarkable. Taking handwritten notes on your paper tablet means no notifications or interruptions, keeping you focused on what you and your team are discussing.

You can of course add a new page to keep your handwritten notes separate from the typed agenda — but thanks to the flexibility of digital paper, you can also keep working on the same continuous page.

When you reach the bottom of the page, use a single swipe upward to get more space. The page can be as long as you need, which means no flipping back and forth between pages to find something you wrote down earlier.

Edit and expand on your notes in the desktop app

Once the workshop has ended, turn your handwritten notes into typed text by tapping the export and share icon in the toolbar on your paper tablet and then

Since the converted text is saved as a new page, you can easily go back to your handwritten notes and review them if anything is unclear. Depending on which writing tools and colors you used on your paper tablet, you’ll also find that highlights and handwritten notes stand out against the calm grayscale tones of the desktop app.

You can add highlights and annotations to your typed text like you would any ebook or PDF on your paper tablet. As an added bonus, you can send the annotated notes to your team members directly from your paper tablet.

Run a productive workshop with reMarkable

With Type Folio, a keyboard for reMarkable 2, you can add comfortable, focused typing to your paper tablet, complementing the paper-like handwriting feel.

Type Folio is perfect for when you need to get an idea down on paper quickly, or when you want to draft a longer text, like a report, without distractions.

All set up? Here’s how to get started with Type Folio.

Open the front cover of your Type Folio all the way around so it touches the back cover. Turn the paper tablet so the spine faces toward you. Gently press the tabs on the sides of your Type Folio and lift up and away from you to reveal the keyboard.

In this position, your reMarkable will resemble an open laptop. Unlike a laptop, your paper tablet is a blank canvas for focused typing. No notifications, pop-ups, or social media — just you and your thoughts.

You’re ready to start drafting. Tap the formatting menu to change the paragraph style or add bullet points. The page will expand vertically as you write, keeping all your thoughts together on a single continuous page. To navigate, swipe with one finger to scroll quickly, or with two fingers to pan.

Free Create: combine handwriting and typing

Place your hands behind your reMarkable and tilt it toward you. Push the backrest with the reMarkable logo out, and lower the paper tablet.

This near-flat position is perfect for combining handwritten and typed notes, also known as Free Create. Handwritten text you write with your Marker anchors intelligently to typed text. When you move typed text up and down on the page, your scribbled and typed notes will stay connected.

You can still use the handwriting conversion feature when combining handwritten and typed notes. The feature will automatically detect your handwritten notes and convert them to text on a separate page.

Typewriters, computers, and voice recognition have all challenged the art and craft of writing, and for good reason: being able to type dozens of words a minute and easily edit your writing has led to major productivity gains.

Still, the loops and lines of longhand refuse to die. If you haven’t tried it for a while, here’s our guide to getting started.

Handwriting is exercise for both hand and mind. But before jumping off the deep end, consider doing a few warm-up exercises to strengthen and stretch your muscles. Wriggle your fingers, move your wrists in a circle, or play an imaginary piano on the table. It’ll help keep your hand relaxed for longer.

Locate the best surface for writing and slip into a comfortable seat. For the best possible starting point, ask yourself: Am I sitting well? Are my arms and shoulders relaxed? Am I in a quiet place? Am I able to block out distractions?

The ballpoint pen is a reliable workhorse, the pencil adds texture and personality to your strokes, and the fineliner is an artist favorite for its detailed and precise linework. The calligraphy pen, which is sensitive to stroke direction, has an almost magical ability to make even the most unsteady cursive scribbles look like master penmanship.

About 7 out of 100 people are left-handed, which makes writing setups that favor the majority more difficult if you naturally hold the pen in your left hand. Left-handers solve this problem in many ways, but one solution is to give your left arm more room and hold the pen higher up for better visibility — about an inch from the tip is a good starting point.

reMarkable also has a left-handed mode. This can be selected when setting up your paper tablet for the first time, but you can also switch between left- and right-handed modes if you wish later on.

Don't pressure yourself by thinking you need to write endless pages of notes, but learn to enjoy the process instead. Try doodling as a way to get into the flow and connect your hands with your thoughts. Allow motion to take lead — and feel how shapes, lines, and letters roll effortlessly from your wrist. You might soon find yourself sinking deeper into concentration and new ideas.

Doodling has prepared your hand for the shapes of letters. As a bridge to full longhand, try practicting entries from the Dolch list — a roster of the 220 most commonly used English words.

Or try out a few pangrams. These are sentences that make use of all letters of the alphabet, and include zappy phrases such as “The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog”; “When zombies arrive, quickly fax Judge Pat”; and “Six juicy big steaks sizzled in a pan as five workmen left the quarry.”

These exercises imbue your hand with muscle memory and provide a jumping-off point for longer, more focused writing.

Don’t fret about making mistakes. Nobody’s watching anyway, and when working digitally you can always go back by pressing undo, or use the eraser to wipe it all out and start over. Alternatively, use the selection tool to resize and move entire sections, either around on the page or between notebooks.

By now your muscles and mind should be relaxed, your hands warmed up, and your concentration at its peak. Hopefully, the process has also sparked some ideas and inspiration along the way — making it hard to put down the Marker.

7 tips for getting back into writing longhand

There’s no one right way to record what happens in a meeting. What’s important is that someone is on hand to turn discussion into clear action.

That someone could be you. Whether you prefer detailed meeting minutes, a simple agenda with bullet points, or a more specialized technique such as the Cornell Method, your paper tablet supports many workflows with templates and other features that make taking and sharing meeting notes effortless.

Looking for new ways to take meeting notes? Here are three examples to try:

If your team regularly shares meeting agendas ahead of time, the outline method may be for you. Adding notes below different items on the agenda may sound simple, but that doesn’t make this method any less powerful.

Writing on paper, this method can quickly become messy and chaotic, with notes belonging to one item spilling over into another. On reMarkable, you can select and shift around handwritten text with ease.

Use the selection tool to grab, move, and resize individual words, sentences, or entire paragraphs, giving yourself more room during meetings when a specific topic dominates discussion; taking up most of your time and notes.

Instead of following the chronological flow of the meeting, the quadrant method splits your notes into four sections for predictable, organized note-taking every time. Label the quadrants “questions,” “notes,” “personal action items,” and “assign to others” — or add your own twist to the categories — and add notes to each section as the meeting progresses.

Promoting focus is one of this method’s biggest strengths. For example, if you need to review your personal action items, the quadrant method gives you a clutter-free view of just the tasks assigned to you.

For an extra layer of prioritization, use different-colored highlights to draw attention to important details like dates and results.

Popular among students, the Cornell Method encourages you to summarize meetings and condense your notes into key topics and questions.

Become a notorious note-taker with the Cornell Method

You can convert your handwriting to typed text that can be reused in emails, reports, or presentations. To optimize your handwriting for conversion to text, remember to use simple formatting: your reMarkable can recognize and convert cursive and block letters, bullet points, and even some smiley faces, but not mathematical symbols and diagrams.

You can send your converted notes by email directly from your reMarkable, but you can also integrate Google Drive, Dropbox, and Microsoft OneDrive with your paper tablet. This enables you to upload notes and documents to the cloud storage solution your colleagues are already using, making them readily available to the whole organization.

Need a few more lines to fit all your meeting notes? There’s no need to add a whole new page. Use two fingers to pan and scroll inside any document, giving you more space to work with.

But before you start scribbling in the margins, here’s one quick tip: did you know you can adjust the layout of ebooks and PDFs on your paper tablet? 

You can tailor the view of ebooks to fit your specific note-taking needs — by adjusting the line spacing, justification, margins, and the size of the text.

This allows you to tweak the amount of white space available on the page, so you can keep the text in clear focus when underlining or adding highlights, but opt for wider margins if you’d prefer a little more room for new ideas.

Note pages offer a useful way to add space for more detailed thoughts or comments in your existing documents. They also prevent you from needing to break focus when you’re in the middle of a creative flow. You can add these blank pages to both PDF documents and ebooks, whenever you’re reading and find yourself short of space on the current page and in the margins.

How to organize and edit PDFs on reMarkable

Layers can be used to make more complex drawings or sketches, or to show and hide sections of your work. When working with existing texts, such as PDFs or ebooks — or even PNG or JPEG files — the feature allows you to write, draw, and add comments or corrections on several levels at the same time.

You have five active layers at your disposal. You can hide, delete, or even rearrange layers by moving them up or down in the order that works best for you. Add a new layer to an ebook, and then make all your annotations disappear at the touch of a button, so you can continue reading once you’re done.

Now that you’ve got all your documents stored, adjusted, and prepped for work, you can start exploring all the benefits of your digital toolkit, where your highlighter will never run dry and your ballpoint pen will never leak. Made a mistake? Just undo or erase and try again. 

Your reMarkable comes with eight distinct writing tools, all of which respond in their own unique ways to pressure, tilt, and direction of your strokes. With most of them, you can also choose between three levels of stroke thickness. 

The highlighter is an annotators best friend, and a popular first choice for spotlighting particularly interesting portions of text. The fineliner is excellent for drawing a line under a word or phrase, as it provides a rounded, even stroke with the same thickness, regardless of the angle you hold it at. Or, for extra gravitas, opt for the marker. This tool has different line textures depending on the pressure and speed you write with, which makes it great for writing bold headers or adding extra emphasis where needed.

On your device, all writing tools display in either black, gray, or white. However, in our apps, when sending your files by email, or using Screen Share to present to others, the fineliner, marker, and ballpoint pen can all display in blue or red ink if needed. This can come in handy when adding corrections to a text draft or a research paper, or when you need to draw specific attention to a point in the text — such as flagging parts of a budget that need rebalancing.

In addition, the highlighter exports in radiant pink, green, and yellow, to make marked-up documents even easier to read. For example, you could use colors to differentiate between sections of text by theme. There’s also a grayscale option, useful for detailed shading when sketching or drawing.

The highlighter snaps perfectly into place to align with text, making for much neater workflow than in ordinary books. You can also color entire paragraphs with one single vertical stroke along the edge of the text you want covered.
