Your notebooks deserve cover pages as compelling as their contents. By creating custom cover pages, you not only add a bit of artistic flair to your reMarkable, but you also make the notes on your paper tablet more organized and findable at a glance.

Dark pages with white text provide a beautiful contrast to the paper-like CANVAS display.

To create a dark page, draw a dark area with one of the thicker brushes, like the marker or paintbrush, and then use the selection tool to scale the area up. Copy and paste the selection until the whole page is covered. Finally, use your writing tool of choice and write or draw the title of your notebook in white ink.

You can also use the selection tool to create elaborately patterned cover pages.

It all starts with the perfect shape. Draw your shape — be it a diamond, a squiggle, or a swirl — using a precision writing tool such as the fineliner. Clone the shape with the selection tool, move it into place, clone the new group of shapes, and repeat until the whole page is patterned to your liking.

A colorful cover page can make a big splash when viewing your notebooks in the reMarkable desktop and mobile apps.

Many writing tools feature the option to write or draw in exported color, including the ballpoint pen, fineliner, marker, and highlighter. Mix and match colors and strokes to create eye-popping cover pages that are uniquely you.

If writing “Meeting notes” or “My diary” on the cover page isn’t your style, try decorating your cover page with an illustration instead.

The pencil is the best writing tool for sketching. It responds to the amount of pressure and tilt you use, changing the thickness of the line being drawn on the display.

As you create your cover pages, collect them all in the same folder for easy access. Either to use as templates, or to keep track of your favorite designs.

The next time you want to create a new notebook, simply go to your cover page folder and duplicate the cover page you want — or the entire notebook — and move it to the right location on your paper tablet.

Having reMarkable at your fingertips already puts you a step ahead of the game when it comes to getting, and staying organized. The chief advantage is having all your work in one place so you can always find it when you need it. But how should you set it up?

Here are three tips to make the content on your paper tablet easy to find, store, and and browse.

So, what do we need folders for anyway? Why not just search? The key benefit of your folder system is that it still works when you can’t remember the name of a document, or you’re not even sure what you’re looking for. In short, folders are great for browsing. So with that in mind, it’s smart to come up with a naming system that’s “browse friendly.”

Descriptive folder and subfolder names will always be easier to browse. At a glance, the contents of a folder called “To-do lists” is self-explanatory, while something called “Random stuff” is, of course, harder to determine.

Stuck? Some of the more common file-naming systems label folders by date, project name, department, or client. A great place to start could be to think about the type of work you're doing and what structure would best support it.

2. Find the right number of folders for you

A broader selection of main folders will mean you don’t have as many subfolders to navigate through, but too many can actually create more hassle. Try to design a folder system for your reMarkable with the right number of clicks or taps between you and your work to save you time during the day.

For example, instead of splitting all your notes and documents into two folders, each with three subfolders, why not try making those six subfolders your main ones… It’s a subtle change, but it could be a lot more effective.

How can we find what we need faster? Yesterday’s to-do list, that important PDF you’ve been meaning to sign, or that notebook with all your latest ideas. For things you need all the time, like a to-do list or weekly planner, a good idea is adding it as a favorite so you can always pull it up with a few quick taps.

Tags are another amazing tool that can shorten your search time, and even open up new ways of viewing your work. Let’s say you had a “Follow up” tag, for things like cool ideas you’d like to do something with and develop later. A quick tap could show you all your in-progress ideas. You could use it as a sort of task list, and then simply remove the tags when you’re done.

Did you know you can always go back to the last few notebooks or documents you viewed? Just swipe down from the top of your paper tablet with two fingers, and you’ll bring up the multitasking drawer with all your recent work.

3 pro tips for organizing your paper tablet

It’s an age-old debate: what system is best for keeping your notes and documents in order, folders or tags?

Folders fit into hierarchies. This gives you predictability when you need to know exactly where your documents are and how they relate to each other.

Tags, on the other hand, belong to networks, where no single label is ranked above any other. This is useful when content changes quickly, or when you want the flexibility to add structure as you go. For example, which documents you tag as “Urgent” or “Follow up” might change from one week to the next.

Both are able to coexist peacefully on your paper tablet. In fact, they’re most powerful when used together.

Notebooks and folders offer a safe and structured home for your notes and documents.

The first step for creating a good folder structure is sorting your content into parent categories. These can be anything from projects or teams to specific meetings or clients. Subfolders help break things down further, and you can nestle additional folders within them whenever you need to tidy up.

Theoretically, you can continue subdividing your content for as long as you like, but it’s wise to limit your folder hierarchy to three or four levels, as the more complex it gets, the harder it is to remember where you put things.

Folders are easy to navigate with a few taps of your Marker, but you can also use search to quickly find exact files in seconds. You do this by tapping the magnifying glass in the upper-right corner of your reMarkable, and typing in the name or parts of the name of the notebook or document you’re after.

It can be helpful to use an “Archive” folder for older notes that you no longer need for your daily work, but which could still be nice to keep for reference or comparison later on. That way they won’t get in your way or clutter things up, but remain searchable and available when you need to retrace your steps.

Tags let you attach keywords to notes, documents, and even to folders themselves, making them easier to find, browse, and filter.

While a file can only be in one folder at a time, it is possible to attach lots of different tags to it. For example, you could tag your meeting notes with the topic or theme of meeting as well as the date, or level or urgency, and then save the file in the project's folder.

Tags offer added flexibility over folders, which often require you to decide on categories and a structure upfront, and then stick to it. This consistency can be very helpful, but sometimes you might want more spontaneity — perhaps you simply don’t know how a project will grow and develop over time. With tags, you can add structure in small, careful steps, by adding keywords after you’ve identified patterns and themes in your content, instead of guessing.

Tagging notes by content or topic, such as “Project briefs” or “Meeting notes,” is a popular way to go. But consider letting your folders do that job, and use tags that reflect the action you intend to take or what stage in the process you are. With tags such as “Important,” “Follow up,” or “Completed,” it becomes easy to track the status of notes throughout the thought process.


Different spellings can cause what was intended as a single tag to show up as different ones whenever you filter your documents. So the more standardized your naming is, the easier it will be to find your way back to your files. Are you using singular or plural, caps or no caps? 

Tags provide the best service when kept as simple as possible. It is therefore best to limit your keywords to two words or less. If your notes need more than two words, consider creating two or more separate tags instead.
